Decolonising research and knowledge production

This workshop is designed for researchers interested in confronting colonialism in knowledge
production. It offers an introduction to anti/post/decolonial theories, not just as a framework for
analysing research but as an ethical stance.

It builds on the idea that different geopolitical settings of
colonialism and colonial violence have shaped and continue to inform anti-colonial and decolonial
ideas and actions that consider them necessary because colonial, settler-colonial and post-colonial
systems of exploitation, extraction and violence continue to exist and are deeply embedded within the
economic, political and societal institutions we inhabit, universities included.

This workshop has three sessions:

  1.  What does it mean to decolonise research and knowledge production?
    • On Friday 27 october from 13h until 17h
  2. Decolonial research methods: challenging coloniality in knowledge production
    • On Friday 10 November from 13h until 17h
  3. Reflexivity, positionality and ethics in research
    • On Friday 17 November from 13h until 17h

The workshop will take place on the VUB campus in Etterbeek. More information can be found on our platform TEO LRN.
