Workshops Science Communication and Open Science @ Orpheus Annual Conference, 13 April 2023

On 13 April 2023, the five Flemish universities are offering you an exciting day filled with two workshops in the morning and presentations in the afternoon on science communication and open science.

Below you find a more detailed description of the program that will take place in Leuven (Quadrivium, Celestijnenlaan 200H, 3001 Leuven).

PROGRAM

9.00-12.30h: Morning session:

How to make a graphical abstract

Congratulations! Your paper is ready for submission. The last thing the publisher asks you for is a graphical abstract, a visual summary of your findings. It should give the reader an immediate understanding of the key messages, at a single glance.

Wow, that’s a challenge. You might ask yourself: Why do I need that and how do I prepare it?

In this workshop, Luk Cox and Idoya Lahortiga (Somersault 1824) will focus on the why and how of graphical abstracts. We’ll also share tips and tricks to improve your workflow, so you can get the best possible result. After all, it might be the most important image in your publication.

How to make your research instafamous
Instagram has almost 1.5 billion users worldwide and is the perfect place to show what your research is all about – in an attractive and very visual way. Storytelling is key and the creative possibilities are endless.
Don’t know how to start or how to get the best results? Kristof D’hanens (I Like Media) will guide you around this social network and surprise you with numerous good cases and examples.
How do you use captions and hashtags? What is the difference between Reels and Stories? And how can Instagram Guides be useful for you as a researcher?

13.30-17.30h: Afternoon session
Open Science = open for business – why you should make it your business!
Lennart Martens (Ghent University and VIB, Belgium) will talk about the opportunities of open science and show how you can benefit from public data

The future of research assessment in the Open Science era.
Robert Harris (Karolinska Institute, Sweden) will address how evaluation criteria for PhD theses, funding and professorships are being reformed from metrics to a qualitative judgement

The Good Scientists: a volunteer-based platform for young researchers to engage with the third sector
Léna Prouchet (Exeter University, UK)

Why it is not all about the data; how can scientists counteract fake social media news Laura Smillie (EC policy analyst, Belgium) will explain why data might be all that matters to scientists but that the wider public makes a judgement based on other criteria

Dealing with aggression as a high-profile scientist in the news; the experience of a virologist during covid. Marc van Ranst (KU Leuven, Belgium) will give his personal view on why it is important to provide the public with correct information, even in the face of real physical threat

Explaining the need for animal experiments to the general public. Sabine Chourbaji (Heidelberg University, Germany) will explain how to communicate on the use of animals for experiments to different individuals with differing backgrounds and opinions

A sandwich lunch and coffee breaks will be provided.
