About the lecture
The NOVA National School of Public Health (NOVA NSPH) addresses environmental determinants of health through a comprehensive and integrative approach grounded in the One Health concept. Professor Susana Viegas conducts research focused on the impact of chemical, biological, and physical exposures in both occupational and community settings. Her contributions include the development of advanced biomonitoring tools and exposure assessment methodologies that support evidence-based public health actions. Furthermore, her work spans indoor and outdoor air quality, food and water contamination, and occupational risks associated with toxic substances and microbial agents. Through this research, her team generates data aimed at improving environmental conditions in homes, schools, and workplaces, with particular emphasis on protecting vulnerable populations.

About the speaker
Prof. Susana Viegas is a professor and researcher at the NOVA National School of Public Health and a member of the Comprehensive Health Research Centre. She holds a PhD in Public Health, a Master’s in Toxicology and Occupational Health, and a Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Health. She is also a certified European Registered Toxicologist. Prof. Viegas lectures on Environmental and Occupational Health and leads multiple research projects focused on environmental determinants of health, including exposure assessment and risk assessment. Her expertise in the field is further recognised through her roles on several high-profile European and international scientific bodies:
•    Member of the Risk Assessment Committee at the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA)
•    Member of the Scientific Committee of the European Environment Agency (topic: Environment & Health – Chemicals)
•    Visiting Scientist at the Monographs Programme of the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), WHO since 2021
•    Member of the Technical Advisory Group on Occupational Burden of Disease Estimation of the World Health Organization (WHO)
Prof. Viegas has authored and co-authored over 120 scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals and presented more than 400 conference abstracts. In recognition of her scientific impact, she was included in the World’s Top 2% Scientists list compiled by Stanford University in 2022.
