Phonetics as a key method for language description and documentation
Phonetics is to linguistics what linguistics is to areal studies: a bit on the side, as it is relatively intimidating and not very conducive to self-study without an initial grasp. However, a good idea of a few basic principles that are not too complicated, for example about the anatomy and aerodynamics of speech, makes it possible to make sense of a large number of phonological rules and generalisations in synchrony and diachrony.
