IUI: iSi Health Interuniversity workshop on in Silico Health

This interuniversity 2-day workshop focuses on the field of in silico techniques for health, and more specifically on the use of mechanistic, physics-based models and simulations to understand human physiological processes and disease progression.

Themes

  • Good simulation practices
  • The use of AI for in silico research in health
  • Valorisation of in silico techniques for health

Currently confirmed Keynote Speakers

  • Marco Viceconti (University of Bologna)
  • Serfaim Moustakidis (AIDEAS)
  • Mathias Peirlinck (TU Delft)

Audience and targets
This workshop is targeting PhD & Postdoc researchers active in the field of in silico techniques for health, more specifically those developing and/or using computer/mathematical models for simulations relating to health/medicine topics. The specific aims of this workshop for PhD students and Postdoc researchers are to:

  • Promote the importance of establishing the credibility of in silico mechanistic models, through lectures on verification and validation concepts;
  • Impart good simulation practices for modellers with hands-on activities integrating the most appropriate tools for the evaluation of in silico mechanistic models;
  • Gain knowledge about aspects of patient and public involvement (PPI) for in silico techniques within medicine, to understand the current challenges and barriers for the responsible implementation of these in silico techniques;
  • Learn about to use of artificial intelligence methods to produce more explainable and better physics-based models in healthcare applications;
  • Showcase the value of in silico techniques for health with presentations of successful valorisation applications;
  • Stimulate bench-to-bedside valorisation of in silico techniques, with a dedicated hands-on session to identify ‘revolutionary world class’ clinical applications of in silico techniques;
  • Enhance science communication skills for participants by presenting a case study for the ‘revolutionary world class’ application challenge;
  • Provide an opportunity for young researchers to present their work on in silico techniques for health with a poster session;
  • Build a network of students working on in silico techniques for health between KU Leuven, Ghent University, the University of Antwerp, and the Vrije Universiteit Brussel.
