Meet the Jury Gemma Atkinson on Bioinformatics tools for discovering the molecular machinery of bacteria vs phage, phage vs phage and bacteria vs bacteria conflict
Arenberg Doctoral School is proud to invite you to Meet The Jury!
When internationally renowned experts visit KU Leuven as a member of a PhD Examination Committee, we like to seize this opportunity to give this expert a forum to a large audience. All members of Science, Engineering & Technology are most welcome to the Meet The Jury Lectures.
Prof. Gemma Atkinson (Lund University, Sweden) will give a lecture on “Bioinformatics tools for discovering the molecular machinery of bacteria vs phage, phage vs phage and bacteria vs bacteria conflict”.
Bacteria and phages are engaged in conflicts on several fronts: bacteria defend themselves against phages, phages counter those defences and compete with one another, and bacteria deploy molecular weapons against other bacteria. The proteins involved evolve rapidly, and many remain functionally unannotated even in well studied genomes. In this talk, I will discuss how we use sensitive functional annotation and mining of genomic diversity hotspots to find this hidden machinery, and how experimental validation helps reveal new molecular mechanisms.
Following the lecture, there will be opportunity for young researchers to interact with her.
