Abstract 
Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), comprising Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, presents a complex interplay of immune dysregulation within the gastrointestinal tract. Characterized by chronic inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract, IBD significantly impairs quality of life and lacks a definitive cure. Recent advancements in immunotherapy have highlighted the role of regulatory T cells (Tregs) as potential therapeutic agents in restoring immune balance and ameliorating the chronic inflammation associated with IBD.
Research indicates that IBD patients often exhibit deficiencies in Tregs, contributing to the chronic inflammation characteristic of the disease. Leveraging this insight, scientists are investigating Treg-based therapies to enhance immune regulation in the gut. Preliminary studies involving the ex vivo expansion of Tregs followed by their reintroduction into patients show promise in reducing inflammation and ameliorating IBD symptoms.
Simultaneously, challenges persist, such as determining optimal dosages, ensuring Treg stability, and addressing concerns about broader immunosuppression. Ongoing and further investigations should clarify the role of Tregs in offering targeted interventions that may revolutionize the management of this complex and challenging condition.

About the speaker
Professor Irving earned his Medical degree from Cambridge University and The London Hospital Medical College, graduating with distinction in 1995. His early research focused on inflammatory bowel disease, and later he extended his research activities during a period in Australia.
He is widely recognized as an international authority in inflammatory bowel disease, specifically Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. At Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital in London, Professor Irving leads the inflammatory bowel disease service and oversees a substantial research and clinical trial program. Notably, he has contributed to the British Society of Gastroenterology’s IBD Section and chaired the Education Committee of the European Crohn’s and Colitis Organisation.
Professor Irving has a keen interest in irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and, in collaboration with dietetic colleagues at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital and King’s College London, introduced the low FODMAP diet to the UK. Ongoing research in this field reflects his commitment.
With a remarkable portfolio comprising over 200 publications and three authored books, Professor Irving’s practice spans all aspects of luminal gastroenterology. He has a specific focus on inflammatory bowel disease and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). In endoscopy, his expertise encompasses small bowel capsule endoscopy, gastroscopy, and colonoscopy.
